HIKING AND BIRD-WATCHING

Although Antigua has many trails and tracks that would be ideal for hiking it has not yet been developed as an organized activity.  Most of the popular hikes lead to one or another of the island’s many hilltop fortifications: Fort George sits atop Monk’s Hill, and Fort Barrington (captured by the French in 1666) is on the promontory at Deep Bay. The Historical and Archaeological Society frequently arranges group hikes.
The largest bird sanctuary in the Caribbean is to be found on Barbuda, this is, however, only accessible by boat.  The Frigate Bird Sanctuary on Barbuda contains over 170 species of birds and is well worth a visit.  Much of the appeal of the natural environment in Antigua and Barbuda is the multitude of bird species to be found there. Long Island and Great Bird Island also offer outstanding opportunities for bird-watchers.

Headquarters of the Antigua & Barbuda Horse Society, Spring Hill is affiliated to the F.E.I. and is a member of the Caribbean Equestrian Association.  The Club offers lessons in show-jumping and dressage for beginners and experienced riders.

The Stables are very close to several beaches and to the historic
sites of English Harbour. Ride in the cool of the morning and explore
the rest of English Harbour in the afternoon. We offer some wonderful
trail rides through the hills with scenic views, or treks to the beach
with the opportunity to swim with your horse in the warm waters
of this Caribbean island.

Ride up to historic Monks Hill fort, built as a last resort in 1680. Ride
through the ruins to see the most spectacular views of this lovely area.
